If you've ever shopped for cashews online or at a premium dry fruits store, you've seen codes like W180, W210, W240, W320 printed on packaging. Most people have no idea what these mean — and end up paying more or less than their cashews are worth. This guide explains the whole grading system in plain language.
What Does the "W" Grade Mean?
The "W" stands for "Whole" — meaning whole, unbroken cashew kernels. The number that follows represents how many cashews fit into one pound (454g). So W180 means 180 cashews per pound, W240 means 240 cashews per pound, and W320 means 320 cashews per pound.
The logic is simple: fewer cashews per pound means each cashew is larger. W180 cashews are the largest and most premium; W320 are smaller, less expensive, but equally nutritious.

Which Grade Should You Buy?
- W180: Best for Diwali gifting hampers and impressing guests — large, beautiful presentation
- W210: Premium daily snacking — excellent size and taste at a slight premium over W240
- W240: The sweet spot — best value, great size, ideal for both snacking and cooking. Our most popular.
- W320: Great for cooking curries, sweets and trail mixes. Most economical whole grade.
- Splits/Pieces: Best for cashew gravy, cashew butter, kheer and baking — no difference in flavour
Does Grade Affect Nutrition?
No — all cashew grades have identical nutritional profiles. A W180 cashew has the same protein, fat, minerals and vitamins as a W320 cashew from the same origin. The grade only indicates the physical size and therefore affects presentation and price, not nutrition.
TheNutBasket sells W240 grade cashews — the premium choice for everyday snacking. They're large enough to be visually appealing and premium-tasting, but priced fairly for daily consumption. If you're cooking, our Cashew Splits offer the same quality at a lower price point.
